Catch a morning train from London St Pancras or Ebbsfleet to Paris and then transfer to the Gare du Nord for a high-speed TGV Lyria service down to Basel on the Swiss border. Here, check in for an overnight stay at the Hotel Gaia (or similar) opposite the station.
Basel is a cultural hub of Switzerland with some world-class museums and a lovely old town area spanning the mighty River Rhine. The water is so clean here that locals regularly commute by getting in the river and letting the current carry them downstream!
You have ‘open’ tickets today for your journey to Wengen (with a change in Interlaken) which will take around 2.5 hours. So you can choose whether to stay in Basel for a while and explore the city, perhaps visiting one of the ultra-modern museums or taking a stroll along the Rhine or alternatively, you can head straight to Wengen after breakfast to give you more time to relax in the mountains.
Arrive into Wengen and check in for 2 nights at the Sunstar Hotel Wengen (or similar). This evening, you’ll be served a delicious dinner at the hotel.
You have a free day in Wengen today to enjoy at your leisure. You can either take an easy stroll through town and stop for coffee and cake in one of the many cafés or just relax and enjoy the hotel’s pool and spa.
TMR RECOMMENDS: Why not take a trip on the Jungfrau Railway today? Take a train to the highest station in Europe at the top of the Jungfrau Mountain with panoramic views over the Alps. You can either book this trip as part of your package with us or simply decide on the day. Again, you will get a 50% discount with your Swiss Card (regardless of whether you book in advance or on the day).
Today, you will take a cable car to the top of Mänchlichen and then walk via Kleine Scheidegg to Grindelwald, with spectacular views of the distinctive peaks of the Jungfrau, Eiger and Monsh along the way. The full hike will take around 4.5 hours but you can shorten this by using local trains and/or cableways for part of the route. Your Swiss Card will give you a 50% discount on these.
Once you arrive into Grindelwald, you’ll be staying for 3 nights at the Sunstar Grindelwald Hotel (or similar). You will be offered a welcome drink on arrival, and then a 4-course dinner this evening. The hotel also offers a Wellness Oasis, with a large swimming pool, log cabin sauna, Roman baths and massage showers.
Enjoy two free days in Grindelwald to relax and take advantage of the hotel’s leisure facilities or perhaps try one of the many walks suggested in your hiking documentation. On one of your free days, we recommend a relatively short hike up to the Milchbach restaurant next to the Oberer glacier, where you can enjoy a drink and panoramic views. You can take the cable car back down from Pfingstegg.
On both evenings, you will be served a 4-course meal in the hotel restaurant.
Enjoy a last breakfast at your hotel before catching the First gondola from Grindelwald and then walking the scenic trail towards Grosse Scheidegg, heading steadily downhill via Schatzalp and Rosenlaui for breathtaking views of narrow gorges and dramatic waterfalls. The most dramatic of these will be found at the end of your hike at the famous Reichenbach Falls. The day’s hike should take around 4 hours.
From here, you can either take a cable car into Meiringen or walk the last stretch into the village. Your accommodation for the next 2 nights will be at the Hotel Alpbach (or similar). A 4-course dinner will be served this evening in the restaurant.
After a leisurely breakfast at your hotel, take a gondola up to the Mägisalp. From here, a 4-hour hike takes you to Planplatten, where you have beautiful panoramic views over the Alps. This is one of the most stunning viewpoints in Switzerland. Your return route takes you via Rütli and back into Meiringen where you have a second night, including a well-deserved dinner.
Leave Meiringen today and take the train to Interlaken where you pick up the direct train service up into Germany and along the Rhine Gorge to Koblenz. Check in at the GHotel & Living (or similar), located within easy reach of the station.
Dinner isn’t included with your stay here, but there are plenty of options for an evening meal in the pretty centre of Koblenz.
After a last breakfast this morning, make your way back to the station and catch a train to Brussels, with a quick change in Cologne. From here, it’s a journey of just under 2 hours back to London St Pancras.
