Suggested Itinerary
Your Slovenian adventure starts in the UK this morning as you board a Eurostar train across to Paris. Here, transfer from Gare du Nord to Gare de Lyon by metro (or we can arrange a private car transfer for you for an additional fee) and connect onto the TGV service to Turin.
This journey takes you first on a high-speed line and then across the Alps, through the Fréjus Tunnel and into Turin where you stay overnight at the Starhotels Majestic (or similar). This hotel is close to Turin Porta Nuova station in the centre of Turin.
Today, you have the morning to explore the fascinating city of Turin, the first capital of Italy and former capital of the Duchy of Savoy.
Just after lunch, make your way into Porta Nuova station for your direct train across the north of Italy, which passes through the cities of Milan, Verona and Venice before delivering you into Trieste. Here your private transfer will take you the short distance to Piran. On arrival, check into the Hotel Piran (or similar) for a 3-night stay.
Arguably Slovenia’s most beautiful coastal town, Piran is perched on a small piece of land jutting out into the Adriatic Sea. The car-free streets of the medieval centre are a joy to wander around, in particular the impressive Tartinijev trg, the oval-shaped main piazza in the centre.
Meanwhile you can also pay a visit to nearby Portoroz with its glamorous casino or the larger port-city of Koper.
This morning you take a taxi (payable locally) from Piran to the nearby city of Koper, which has a railway station. From here, there is a direct train in the afternoon to Ljubljana, which takes a couple of hours.
The journey starts off in mountainous scenery, gradually morphing into rolling hills and eventually gliding into Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana. You will then be staying here for 2 nights at the Best Western Premier Hotel Slon (or similar).
Ljubljana is a fabulous patchwork of architectural styles dating from Roman occupation to Baroque, Vienna Succession and Art Deco. We recommend taking a boat tour on the Ljubljana’s waterways to get a great introduction to this majestic European capital.
TMR RECOMMENDS – Extend your holiday by a night or two with a side-visit to Maribor, in eastern Slovenia, with its stunning old town and rich wine culture.
You will have an open ticket to travel from Ljubljana over to Lake Bled, a journey of an hour or so. Take any train you like to Lesce Bled station, and check into the Hotel Park (or similar) for a 3-night stay.
Lake Bled is one of the Alps’ most beautiful lakes, emerald green in colour, framed by some of the highest peaks in the Julian Alps and complete with a hugely photogenic little church on a small island in the centre.
Spend two full days exploring Lake Bled and the local area. You can walk around the entire lake in a couple of hours and take in the island and surrounding hills from different angles, or take advantage of some of the many outdoor sports on offer.
Also included will be a day trip on the scenic Bohinj Railway, which even sometimes has steam departures if we time it right! The journey takes in a very attractive route finishing in the town of Nova Gorica, right on the Italian border
After breakfast this morning, return to Lesce Bled station and take a direct train through the Austrian Alps to Munich. You’ll arrive mid-afternoon into Munich’s main station and check in at the Courtyard Munich City Centre (or similar) for an overnight stay.
Bavarian capital Munich is one of Germany’s most historic cities. Perhaps enjoy a drink in the famous Höfbrauhaus beer hall in the old town before choosing from one of the many restaurant options for your evening meal.
Leave Munich this morning and take a high-speed ICE service to Frankfurt, with a connecting train to Brussels. Here, transfer on to the Eurostar for your return journey to London.
