Suggested Itinerary

Christmas Markets of Alsace

Set off on your Alsatian adventure this morning from London St Pancras, Ebbsfleet International or Ashford International.  Whizz through Kent and into the Channel Tunnel, before gliding effortlessly across northern France to Paris.  Here, you make an easy change from Gare du Nord to Gare de l’Est – a stair-less walk of around 10 minutes for which we provide directions – and then you take a TGV service on the super-fast LGV Est at speeds of up to 200mph.  The train delivers you into Colmar, where the train terminates and you make your way to the originally-named Colmar Hotel for a 2-night stay.

Best known for its well-preserved old town, numerous architectural landmarks, and its museums, Colmar also has among the best Christmas Markets in the region. Its magical decoration and warm atmosphere give Colmar a unique and wonderful ambiance that saw it elected 3rd best Christmas market in Europe by the public via the site European Best Destination. A thoroughfare sparkling with illuminations leads you through the streets to discover the 5 traditional markets, each of them constitutes a mini-village with its world of passionate craftsmen.

Take a bus this morning from in front of the train station in Colmar, and travel through the beautiful vineyards that produce the world-renowned wine of the Alsace.  It is a short journey of around 45 minutes, and costs €2 payable locally to the driver.  The bus drops you right on the edge of the old town, from where it is a short walk to your hotel for the night, the Best Western Le Schoenenbourg (or similar).

You then have an afternoon to take in the best of this quaint Christmas market, which gets particularly enjoyable after dark, when the day-trippers have left and you can move between delightful little shops, stands and eateries.

After breakfast at the hotel, make your way back to the bus stop for the same bus back to Colmar, again payable locally to the driver.  On arrival at Colmar station, you then have an open ticket to Strasbourg – there are frequent trains and the journey time is around half-an-hour.

Once you reach Strasbourg, check in at the centrally-located Maison Rouge (or similar) for an overnight stay, and set out to explore the largest of Alsace’s Christmas Markets in the region’s iconic capital.

This afternoon it is time to bid farewell to the Alsace after some last-minute shopping for those final gifts!  Board a high-speed TGV train over to Paris or Lille where you connect onto a Eurostar back to London St Pancras.
