Top Rail Travel Experiences
Pride of Africa – a journey from Pretoria to Cape Town. This is a bucket-list experience. I had waited so long to travel on this train, when the whistle blew and the train pulled out of Pretoria rail station, I actually cried. I was so happy! I’d waited years for that very moment.
Favourite Rail Journey:
One of my favourite steam train journeys is the Harz Mountains Steam train, Germany. It is incredibly beautiful in winter with snow-capped mountains as the summit vista. If I was to choose a longer rail trip, with a bit more adventure where you can get closer to the people and culture, it would be the journey between Hanoi and Saigon in Vietnam. Travelling the longest railway line in the world, the Golden Eagle Tran-Siberian was also a rail journey that stands out and was an extra special experience as I journeyed on the inaugural trip of the Golden Eagle with HRH Prince Michael of Kent on board!
This really isn’t fair… making me pick. India.
Ahh…. a couple actually. The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai – I absolutely love the Taj Hotels Group. But I absolutely fell in love with The Oberoi Cecil in Shimla. Located in the hill station town of the Mighty Himalaya, the hotel’s owner (Mr Oberoi) pioneered the idea of luxury hospitality. It was the first hotel in the group and to this day the hotel practises some of the most simple and uncommon philosophies. Their motto ‘the guest is everything’ are not empty words. This is a very special hotel – and best reached by travelling on the steam train from Kalka.
